my thoughts on architecture and design...

Eleven Times Square

I was walking in the rain Saturday afternoon around the Times Square area
when I noticed  a new building going up on 42nd Street and Eighth
Avenue. Actually, what caught my attention were the selling points for
this building.

*LEED Gold Certification for environmental sustainability!
*Superior Air Quality and Energy Efficency!

When I returned home, I went to the website of Eleven Time Square. It is a new office building

that is being labelled as the western gateway to the business district
of the Times Square neighborhood.

Eleven Times Square is developed by SJO Properties, and the architects
who designed this building is FXFOWLE, who have designed many of the
buildings in the Times Square neighborhood like the New York Times HQ
with Renzo Piano.

It is an all glass building combining glass curtain wall system using
"high performance, spectrally selective Low-E glass" and unique "silk-
glass" spandrel panels.

To learn more about Eleven Times Square, please visit their website
where you will find renderings of the building exterior as well as the interior.

Or you may click here for the renderings. And you may click here to read more specifications of the building especially the building's systems.

Pike Loop: Day 16, part 2

Here are some pictures of the installation and an excerpt describing the project.

If you haven't gone down to see the actual installation you should make it a point to get yourself down there.

Pike Loop: Day 12, part 3

Here are videos showing the front and back of the installation. As I mentioned in my previous post, the wall is coming along nicely and they anticipate on completing at the end of next week.

Pike Loop: Day 12 , part 2

There were a group of students from NYIT on a field trip with their professor. They were permitted to come in and look and talk with the "engineers" about the installation. I tagged along for a bit and listened to their conversation.

One of the interesting explanation was about the brick itself. The brick was specially made for this installation as they required brick of specific and consistent size. The "engineer" further explained that the bricks were made with the "clay" pushed thru a dye and then cut.

As you can see, the wall is coming along nicely. I really like the detail where there are moments that the brick wall is lift off the ground. One of the "engineers" explained that they created a platform in order to acheive that raised construction.

I also like the effect and pattern of the brick being laid as it undulated along Pike Street.

They are going to complete at the end of next week. I will try to visit as often as I can, and report. I'd like to see R.O.B. build at a higher elevation.

Pike Loop: Day 12, part 1

Here is a video showing the process of establishing the base foundation for the rest of wall to be built.

As you will see, R.O.B. locates the brick in mid air while the "engineers" shim up to the brick with brick, cut wood, and plastic shims.

The Cooper Hotel, continued...

Some more pictures from the Cooper Square Hotel. A very nice outdoor space to lounge around with a cocktail....too bad it's a bit chilly to enjoy.

Pike Loop: Day 3, evening

I had a busy work day and wasn't able to get to Pike-loop until this evening. As you can see, they've made progress. They've built the first loop, and they've moved the container holding R.O.B.

Pike Loop: Day 2, afternoon

I returned this afternoon to Pike Street and East Broadway to see how the guys were doing with R.O.B. To my pleasure, R.O.B. was in operation and the brick wall was being built. Here is a video and some pictures of their progress.

As you can see from the video, R.O.B. picks up a single brick, which is manually fed from the right side of the container.  The bricks line up in a sort of conveyor belt. Once R.O.B. picks up the brick, he takes it to have epoxy applied to the brick, swings around and gently places the brick on the stack. There's always one guy who oversees the operation R.O.B's operation.  The same guy who feeds the brick is also cleaning up any epoxy that may have squeezed out from the bricks as it stacks on top of each other.

Although this is a step that may lead to machines and robots building in the future, there is still a need for humans to supervise and maintain the machine's operation.

I will return again tomorrow to see the developments of the brick wall, or as it is called, "Pike-loop".

Pike Loop: Day 1, afternoon

Today is the first day of the architectural installation of Pike Loop. I went to Pike Stree and East Broadway during my lunch break to see how they were doing.

The base was set up over wood a a means to provide an even leveled surface as the pavements of NYC is anything but that. I noticed that the R.O.B. was not moving, and then I noticed the architects were checking the equipment. One of the architects explained to me that the glue was not working properly and may have reacted to the lack of use or temperature. In any case, they were fixing it and should have it up and running later today. I'll stop by this evening and check-in on their progress, and report.
